Granules provide asphalt shingles with a protective layer against the elements, ultraviolet exposure and other outdoor threats. In many cases, some amount of granule loss in asphalt shingles is normal and not a cause for concern. However, excessive granule loss in an asphalt shingle roofing system should never be ignored.
Why?
Granule loss can be a sign of deterioration. As asphalt shingles are subjected to rain, hail, heat, snow, wind and other outdoor threats, they shed granules, resulting in the thinning of the protective layer. Over time, this protective layer will wear down completely, leaving asphalt shingles exposed and the roof vulnerable to leaks
Is It Time for a New Roof?
When granule loss reaches the point that you’re seeing bald patches on your asphalt shingles, it is probably time to replace your roof. If you’re seeing all the way to the shingle substrate, it’s definitely time for roofing replacement.
Other Reasons Granule Loss Occurs
Outside of the usual wear-and-tear, granule loss can occur when asphalt shingles have blisters (cosmetic issues or manufacturing defects which become wear points) or when someone walks on the asphalt shingle roof, as foot traffic can loosen granules. You may also be seeing granules in your gutters that are from an older roof, if you’ve had a replacement project before.
